Who:
Our editor has extensive experience in trade publishing, having worked in the editorial department of various award-winning publishing houses, including the International Booker-winning Sandstone Press, where she managed submissions – she knows what acquisition teams are looking for. She has also worked for highly esteemed creative non-fiction journals and, of course, Heroica!

Short Stories
Have a short story you want to polish? Get large-scale guidance on structure and point of view, characterisation, plot and pacing, voice, setting and theme, as well as line-edits on prose style, sensory detail, and sentence length and structure.
Editorial advice is provided in a fully Changes Tracked document with comments, as well as additional comments at the end. I can also provide guidance on putting together a short story collection or advice on which literary magazines and journals to submit your story to.

Articles, Essays & Creative Non-Fiction
Whether you’re just starting to explore essay writing or you’re a seasoned journalist looking for some inspiration, learning how to craft non-fiction takes time and patience. Like fiction edits, this will include guidance on structure and point of view, plot and pacing, voice and theme, as well as line-edits on prose style, sensory detail, and sentence length and structure. Additional attention will be paid to factual inclusions, as well as if the piece's goal has been achieved.

Novels
Opening Chatper(s) Edit
The opening chapters are arguably the most important part of your novel – they need to hook an agent, a publisher and then a reader. Whether you are in the early stages of a novel or have a full draft completed, I will provide detailed comments on your opening chapter(s), focusing on the strength of the characters, scene, stakes, themes, voice and dramatic question that have been established, and where improvements can be made.

Full-Length Edit
Do you have a draft of a novella or novel complete, and are not sure how to begin the editing process?
The Full-Length Edit includes advice on voice/style, plot, pacing, characterisation, character arc and the marketability of your book. Each of these areas will be assessed to identify your strengths and weaknesses and how each story element could be improved to boost your odds of publishing success. I will also provide a chapter-by-chapter breakdown to assess the quality of each chapter independently. Each chapter is assessed for plot holes, inconsistencies, a lack of conflict, pacing issues, whether it is essential to the plot, character consistency and entertainment value. So, you get big-picture developmental feedback, as well as more focused feedback on each building block of your book. I can also advise on and provide a list of which literary agents to submit to once you have redrafted your work to a submittable standard.
